Trail Description

You’ll find East Bay Hills near Sydney — a 3km Partial Loop walk rated 3B for difficulty.

Born from local effort and community pride, the East Bay Hills Trail is a quiet forest loop tucked into the hills on the shores of the Bras d’Or Lake. Officially opened in 2009, the trail winds through over 160 acres of mixed Acadian forest—birch, maple, pine, and hemlock lining your path like old friends. It’s the kind of place that feels familiar, like the logging roads my father took me on when I was young.

The loop is a gentle 3 km walk with plenty of room to breathe, rest, and take in the sights. Interpretive signs along the way offer small lessons in local ecology, and short offshoots lead to hidden spots like the brook and the grove of towering birches. In the winter, it’s just as welcoming for snowshoers looking for a calm, scenic wander.

Accessible, peaceful, and rooted in community, this trail is perfect for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking to slow things down and stretch their legs under the trees.

Rating System

Moosebait.com uses a very understandable rating system which we first saw adapted by the Hike the Highlands Festival here in Cape Breton. It uses numbers and letters to represent the two barriers which normally pose difficulty for people, Incline and  Terrain.

Incline Number:

Rating 1: Very little hill or stair climbing.

Rating
2: Some moderate hill or stair climbing.

Rating
3: Some significant hill or stair climbing.

Rating
4: A good deal of significant hill or stair climbing.

Rating
5: Many steep hills or high altitude trails.

Terrain Rating:

Rating A: Almost entirely on pavement; probably suitable for baby strollers.

Rating
B: A significant part of the hike takes place on well-groomed trails, with very little difficult terrain.

Rating
C: A significant part of the hike takes place on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky or rooted paths).

Rating
D: A significant part of the trail takes place on very difficult terrain.

Rating
E: The majority of the hike takes place on very difficult terrain.
