Hidden in the hills behind Wagmatcook Forst Nation, Humes River Falls is a forest adventure with a big reward at the end. This trail winds through the Humes River Wilderness Area, following old logging and ATV roads before narrowing into a marked path through thick woods and across a few lively stream crossings.
At 10 km return, this is a longer trek, but it’s a good one. Keep an eye out for trail markers and ropes to help with the steeper bits, especially as you drop down into the gorge where the falls make their appearance. The waterfall itself is breathtaking: around 20 metres tall and tucked into a mossy cleft in the forest, roaring after the rain and peaceful in drier seasons.
This trail is a solid choice for experienced walkers looking to stretch their legs and spend a few hours in Cape Breton backcountry. Bring snacks, good boots, and take your time. The forest here doesn’t rush anyone.
