Tucked inland from the sometimes harsh coast, the Barachois Mountain Gorge trail follows the path of the river which carved the age old gorge the trail follows. The word “Barachois” comes from the French term for a coastal lagoon—common along this coast—but here, it leads you upriver through a wilder, less-traveled stretch of land. This area was once used for logging and transport, and echoes of that past still shape the trail today.
The 5 km return trip follows old cart roads and ATV tracks, winding through dense Acadian forest. Expect some wet patches or downed trees, as the trail crosses low-lying ground and skirts past puddles, washouts, and rough-cut bypasses. It’s a rugged walk, but one that gives you a true nature escape.
Along the way, the river keeps you company, often just out of sight but never far off. This is a quiet trail for those looking to leave the paved world behind and take in the sound of the forest.
