North River Falls

This full-day trek is for those who like their hikes with a little grit and a lot of reward. North River Falls isn’t just Cape Breton’s tallest waterfall—it’s a destination that makes you earn it, and that’s exactly why we love it.

The journey starts gentle, winding along the river past mossy stones and whispering trees. You’ll pass remnants of old homesteads—stone walls and foundations that hint at the lives once lived deep in this valley. But don’t get too comfortable. About halfway through, the trail narrows and climbs, and the terrain gets wild. Roots, boulders, stream hops—it’s all part of the fun.

At the end of the trail, the forest opens, and there they are: North River Falls, crashing down nearly 100 feet in a thunder of mist and spray. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to sit awhile—maybe dip your feet in the river, stretch out on a warm rock, and let the sound of the falls do the talking.

We’ll bring a trail lunch to keep you fueled, and there’s plenty of time to stop, take photos, or catch your breath along the way. This hike is a full-day experience, so expect tired legs and full hearts by the time we’re back at the trailhead.
